We’re your community registry agent, and we’re here for all of your biggest life events.
Whether it’s getting your driver’s licence, tying the knot with a loved one, welcoming a new family addition, starting a new business, or researching family records, Alberta’s registry agents are there, playing a central role in all of life’s milestones.
Registry agents are part of a broader collective, the Association of Alberta Registry Agents, where we work together to identify best practices and collaborative opportunities to keep delivering timely, accessible, and reliable services across 200 locations in Alberta.
We also offer a number of services online to make things more convenient for you. You can renew your vehicle registration or sign up for driver's licence and vehicle registration renewal reminders without visiting a registry.
Operated by your neighbour, friend, or family member, registry agents work in partnership with the Government of Alberta to support more than one million Albertans annually by delivering more than 200 government services to your community.
We strive to give back to our community. That’s why we’re proud supporters of The War Amps. Learn about how you can support our Key Tag Service campaign to help children with amputees access the artificial limbs they need to lead full and active lives.
In the last four years, ten registry agents across the province have been forced to close, due to rising inflation and operating costs. This impacts local economies, communities, and Albertans’ ability to access important services like official documentation and licensing.
"The loss of our registries has had an economic impact on our families, seniors, and local businesses not only in the town but also for people in surrounding areas as they now have to travel at least 35 minutes to the nearest registry office. This is not only cumbersome but costly and also affects potential spending in our local business. We want to attract people to our town and provide them with essential services that encourage them to do business locally!"
Mayor Amy Cherniwchan Smoky Lake
"Registry agents play a crucial role in supporting rural communities by ensuring that much-needed registry services are available to rural residents. Like many rural businesses and services, while rural registry agents cannot rely on a large volume of service users, their presence is essential to those living in rural communities and surrounding areas."
Paul McLauchlin, President Rural Municipalities of Alberta
Registry agents throughout the province offer a range of services to Albertans, giving efficient, secure and convenient service throughout the province. While registries offer more than 200 government services, they are primarily helping Albertans with motor vehicle registration and licensing, vital statistics, land title searches, corporate registrations, and personal property registries.
There are more than 200 independently owned and operated registry agents across Alberta ready to serve you.
Alberta is the only privatized registry jurisdiction in North America. Our province created this approach because it means greater accessibility and customer satisfaction. Other jurisdictions have a single centralized system operated by the government, which often means fewer locations and longer wait times for services.
Our made-in-Alberta approach means we have shorter lines, more accessible hours of operation, and are more responsive to Albertans' needs. It also means that we can encourage entrepreneurialism in local communities and create a greater, positive economic impact.
All Alberta registries work in direct partnership with the Government of Alberta to ensure confidentiality and privacy for all service requests. Although they are not run by the government, they are accountable for delivering services with the same commitment to professionalism as though they were government-run.
The Government of Alberta oversees these operations, and our approach is one that can guarantee confidentiality and privacy.
Many important business decisions, processes, procedures and protocols, including prices, are set by the provincial government. Alberta registries work with the Government of Alberta through a service fee review process that invites collaboration and feedback into the fee decision process.
